Artist's Comments

"Your photos would be so much better if you only got closer."

This was sage advice handed to me back when I started shooting landscapes. I've never forgotten that comment and it rings in my head all the time.

Lately, as I've been admiring other photographers portrait work, I try to decipher what it is that is so compelling. And, in most instances it's simply being closer.

I'm in love with my 50mm right now. I decided with Alissa [link] to start "getting closer". Honestly, it's not as simple as it sounds. I love my long lenses. Getting that close to your subject requires a bit of trust on everyone's part. Especially when they are in little or no clothing.

Sonya and I, like I've noted, seem to have an instant rapport. Without knowing her too well or having spent too much time working with her, I'm just very natural and comfortable around her, and I get the same from her. So last night I was able to work even more closely and freely around her.

The result is that the images feel more intimate and personal to me. I hope that the viewer (you) feels more connected in the image.

Ah hell, enough of my blabbing. Dig you 50mm out of your bag and get closer :)

Amen. Normal lenses like a 50mm not only provide a unique perspective to the shot itself due to the field of view, but also force you to think differently about how you shoot the subject, and provide you with an almost instantaneous intimacy that isn't present with telephoto lenses.

I can certainly understand how some models might be intimidated by it, though. Just by distance from the photographer alone, they're going to feel like everything they do is amplified, and this might show less or do less than they should as a result. Sometimes, this can present very subtle expressions and movements, but sometimes it can complete mute the mood.

This photo is not one of those times. Sonya does not look the least bit scared of the camera even at this distance (what, six feet, tops?). The look she's providing you in this shot is the epitome of what I was mentioning before: subtle.
